Soda is never healthy, but new research has found a direct link between soda and cancer.
This is on top of the fact that soda is ultra-fattening Fake Food, and that Diet Soda is Actually More Fattening than Regular Soda.
The cancer-causing culprit? A chemical used for caramel coloring called 4-methylimidazole, or 4-Mel.
Scientists have long known that this chemical causes cancer, and as a result the World Health Organization limits the amount allowed in sodas to 29mcg.
Those government organizations are always looking out for you:
“Oh, that coloring in already extremely unhealthy beverages causes cancer? Those big companies are going to fight back if we get too crazy, so let’s just set a reasonable allowable amount. Less cancer is better than more cancer, right?”
Obviously, any amount of cancer coming with your soft drink is too much. But it gets even worse:
When Consumer Reports purchased sodas in California and had them analyzed by a lab, it found that one 12-ounce serving of Pepsi One or Malta Goya exceeded the levels permitted.
Ten other brands tested by the group did meet the California standard.
Consumer reports is not quite as afraid of Big Soda, so they’re willing to use some harsher language:
“There is no reason why consumers need to be exposed to this avoidable and unnecessary risk that can stem from coloring food and beverages brown.”
Woa, way to let ’em have it chief! That’ll learn ’em.
Here’s the Deal
You shouldn’t drink any soda, ever, at all.
It makes you fat, makes you sick, and now, causes cancer. Stay away from this crap.
Quitting can be hard, but I don’t have any sympathy here. There are people out there who successfully kicked meth and heroin. I’m quite sure you can drop the soda.
