Exercise exists to get you towards food, or get you away from danger. It does not exist to burn calories or build muscle, in fact it’s the opposite.
Your body only builds muscle to make you better at obtaining food or outrunning predators. Burning calories is just a natural consequence of the energy needed to move a mass like your body (physics!).
The secret to efficient, effective workouts, is to mimic the conditions exercise was designed for:
- Be Hungry
- Be Intense
Let’s look at these in more detail.
BE HUNGRY
Your hunter-gatherer ancestors didn’t have much ability for food preservation, so they couldn’t just kill a bunch of animals on one day and then eat for a month. This meant they often hunted when they needed food – they were hungry. As a result, exercising while hungry confers a few benefits. Compared to fed, fasted training increases muscle growth and fat oxidation. Go into your workout on 10-16hrs of fasting – you’ll build more muscle and burn more fat.
Pro Tip – You can get extra benefit from fasted training with 10g BCAAs 15min before a workout.
BE INTENSE
There’s a big difference between jogging miles on the treadmill and running from a F***ING LION interested in eating your intestines. Your workouts should be more like running from a lion. This means get out there and sprint at your full intensity.
When outrunning predators or hunting your own prey, you likely would have wanted to jump over things and climb trees, also with intensity. If you killed a big animal successfully (score!), you would have had to carry or drag it back, maybe a long way. Incorporate similar in your workouts in the form of intense plyometrics and weight-lifting. We saw last week that workouts like this have a ton of benefits.
WHEN YOU KEEP IN MIND WHAT EXERCISE IS DESIGNED FOR, YOUR WORKOUTS ARE MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE.
This makes it pretty clear what you should be doing at the gym. This is why every workout in The MasculON Six-Week Guide to Six-Pack Abs incorporates this thinking. The book included in the course lays out the logic behind these workouts, empowering you to create your own awesome training sessions for the rest of your life.
